This lovely piece of furniture, came from a printers in Ashton-under-Lyne, near Manchester. We took it out of an original print shop, as the owner was retiring. Originally a printers setting out bench, with cast iron top and pitch pine base, it has been sensitively restored, and will now make a fabulous kitchen island. It has original handles, and original makers plate "Walker Bros, Printers Engineers, Wakefield".
- The base of the bench is made from pitch pine, which has the most fabulous patina after years of exposure to ink in the printshop
- It has been adapted to a true island, as the original single drawer has been split in to two, so there is access from either side.
- The top is a wonderful piece of cast iron, which bears minor knocks and scratches from its historical past - it has been specially treated so is protected, and suitable for kitchen use.
- We have added a shelf using the same kind of wood from the same era, to give it more practicality in the home.
